Tekla rebar modeling automation
A plugin that auto-places and quantifies rebar for the four major structural members, aligned with Korean BBS conventions.
Context
A Korean structural engineering consultancy that produces detailed BIM models for construction documentation. Their structural team uses Tekla Structures as the primary modeling environment for rebar design and detailing.
The bottleneck
Manual rebar placement in Tekla for standard structural members — columns, beams, slabs, and walls — was repetitive and time-intensive. Modelers spent significant hours on rule-based work that followed predictable patterns from Korean BBS (Bar Bending Schedule) conventions, with limited automation available in the standard toolset.
What we built
A Tekla Structures plugin that auto-places rebar for the four major structural member types, following Korean BBS conventions. The tool parses structural parameters, applies placement logic per member type, and outputs a quantity take-off aligned with standard BBS format. Reduces manual placement from hours to minutes for standard detailing tasks.
Engagement
Outcome
Working build in active use. Formal build ongoing with coverage for additional member types and edge-case structural configurations.
